The University of Texas at El Paso, also known as UT El Paso or UTEP, is a public, coeducational university, located on the northern bank of the Rio Grande in El Paso, which is the county seat of El Paso County, in the US state of Texas, with a population estimated at a number of more than 665 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census, fact which makes it the 6th largest city in the state and the 22nd largest city in USA.
UTEP was founded in 1914 first starting as The Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy, becoming Texas Western College in 1949, adopting its current name in 1967. The university has an enrollment of approximately 21 000 students and it is the largest university in the U.S. with a majority Mexican-American student population, being the only such university to be classified, by the Carnegie Foundation, as a high research university (RU/H).
It offers its students a variety of degree programs, including undergraduate, graduate and some post-graduate, in numerous fields of study, through several colleges and schools, which include: the College of Business Administration, the College of Education, the Border Intermodal Gateway Transportation Laboratory, Law School Preparation Institute, and the Institute for Policy and Economic Development, overall, the institution offering 81 undergraduate degrees, 65 master's-level degrees and 16 doctoral degrees.
Athletics
UTEP's athletic teams are known as the UTEP Miners, who compete in NCAA Division I in various sports, for both men and women, including in football, basketball, golf, tennis, volleyball, softball, soccer and cross-country. The Miners have experienced victory in many of their sports, over the years, the teams winning a total of 21 NCAA Division I national championships, in men's basketball, men's cross country, men's indoor and men's outdoor track & field, the university being currently ranked 10th overall, among schools in Men's Sports Division I championships.
